RISKMANAGEMENT
NOVEMBER 2014
ACT
The best practiceherewouldbe to
review the expanded graph and
violations to identify trendswithin
your company. These trendswill be
unique to your operations andwill be
items you can immediately address in
your next safetymeetingor operating
manual update.
Alsokeep inmind thatNBISRisk
Managers provide customized resources
(trainingmaterials, impact calculators
andother tools) to insureds basedon the
violation information.
It’s important to remember that the
measure only considers individual
performance basedon24months of data,
with ameasure of 0 indicating the best
performancepossible. You can select
from thedrop-down to view this actual
performancedata alongwithhow this
datawould appear applying themost
recent SMSmethodology. Alsokeep in
mind thatmeasures areproduced for
individual carriers basedon violations
or crashesweightedby time and
severity. Thosemeasures are thenused
todetermineBASICpercentiles, which
compare carrierswith similar safety
events.
Going forward
“What’smeasured canbe improved.” It’s
anold saying, but it still rings true– and
it’s especially truewhenwe apply it to
CSA.
Regardless ofwhether you’re a trucking
companyor a crane company, it’s
important toknowwhere you stand,
both inyour peer group and among the
networkofmotor carriersnationwide.
Youmay logon to thenewSMSwebsite
and find that you’redoing fantastic and
there’snothing tobeworried about,
but youmay also findout that there’s
informationonyour company that
youweren’t even awareof. Regardless,
SMSdataprovides opportunities for
improvement.And it doesn’t get any
simpler than that.
