presentation, I felt itwas very important
toprovide thememberswith the
requirements ofOSHA inspections versus
MSHA inspections, andprovide some
quantifiable information todraw from,”
he said. “I alsowanted to impart to the
membership, the requirements of entering
themineproperties, and the level of the
attention todetail of each inspection.”
Sadler also recognized thebenefits
of theWorkshop as it relates to
membershipvalue. “I believe it is
invaluable for themembership toget
together anddiscuss the issueswe face
inour industry. Collectively,wehave the
solutions tomanyof theproblemswe run
across,”he stressed. “The
networkingprovides uswith
contacts thatmaybe able to
assist in solving aparticular
problem. Thepresentations

adailybasis inour industry,
andpossible solutions or
skills to successfullynavigate
those issues.”
BrentWisenoted inhis
session that, althoughnot the
most common emergency,
tower crane rescues can and
dooccur. Inorder toprovide
aprompt rescue, sitepersonnelmust
quickly take responsibility for ensuring
that an appropriateRescuePlan is carried
out, including thenecessary equipment
and trainedpersonnel.
“Tower crane rescues, already inherently
challengingbecauseof theone-way-up/
one-way-down environment, aremade
evenmoredifficult becauseof their
relative rarity,”he said. “Many companies
fail to incorporate aRescuePlan in the
belief that emergency responderswill
always be able to conduct the rescue.”
While some largermetropolitan areas
mayhave specially trained crews to
dealwith an emergencyup-tower,Wise
pointedout, contractorsmust realize
that even these teamsmaynot be timely.
“Having a safe and simple rescueplan can
make thedifferencebetween successfully
negotiating through the event or dealing
with an evenmoreunfortunate and
perhaps tragicoutcome.”
