requirements forMammoet in2014and
beyond.
Thirtyyears ago, the first SPMTs
weredevelopedbyScheuerle in close
partnershipwithMammoet. Today,
Mammoet employs SPMTmodules in
transport operations across theworld.
Long-termprojectsoften contract SPMT
modules for a longer time,making the
need for additionalmodulesnecessary.
One suchprojectwas themoveof six
cokedrums for theChevronEl Segundo
Refinery. First, thedrumsweremoved
7,330miles fromSpain to thePort of Los
Angeles. Each cokedrumweighed250
metric tons andmeasured30meters long
and8.5meters tall.
After arriving inLosAngeles, thedrums
were transported to theRedondoKing
HarborMarinabybarge twoat a time.On
arrival atKingHarbor, thedrumswere
loadedonto12axle linesof Scheuerle
SPMT, beforebeing transported to
HerondoStreet, on theWestPacificCoast
Highwaynear theEl SegundoRefinery.

The super loadwas 129 feet longand14
feetwide. Itweighed510,000pounds and
loadedout,measuredabout 17 feet tall
onCraneRentalCorporation’sGoldhofer
multi-axle trailer. The27-mile routewas
chosenandplannedover the last yearbya
team that included the state’sDepartment
ofTransportation inorder to travel safely
to the tower’sdestination.At amaximum
speedof 5mph, the tower’s journeywas
expected to take about fourdays, but
thanks to cooperativeweather andan
expert team, took less than three.
Demand increases
Mammoet, aworld leader in solutions
for lifting, transportation, installation
anddecommissioningof large andheavy
structures, announced last fall that it had
purchased650axle linesof Scheuerle
SPMTs. Thedeal brought thenumberof
axle linesusedgloballybyMammoet to
more than3,000.

Super tower
CraneRentalCorporationhasdiscovered
many creativeways touse its SPMT fleet.
Inmid-February, the companywaspart
of a teammovinga super loadnearly30
miles in theNortheast.A tower, used to
refine ethane fromanatural gas stream,
needed tobe transported froma rail spur
to its final destinationat anatural gas
plant. The tower’smovementwas covered
by local newspapers and television, and
sometimesdrew crowdsof up to200

The towerwas off-loaded from the
rail spur using Crane Rental’s gantry
system. It was loaded onto Crane Rental’s
