“The crane accident checklist is really a
crane accident investigationguide,” said
TerryYoung, president ofConstruction
SafetyExperts, aNorthCarolina-based
safety and riskmanagement company.
“I saw thebenefit toSC&RAmembers
immediately, especially to the smaller
companies.”
Young,whohas been a riskmanager
and safetyprofessional for 28years, never
attends an accident investigationwithout
a checklist. “Theguidegives you the
assurance that a complete investigation
was conducted and that you looked at
what youneeded to look at,”he said.
“Without aguide it is easy to forget to
ask a specificquestionor take a specific
measurement.”
Since checklistshaveproven tobe an
effective tool in several crane-related
endeavors, SC&RAhas allocated
significant time and resources to
developingnew checklists andguides.
SC&RA’sTelescopingBoomCrane
Annual InspectionChecklist incorporates
more than165 items, includinghoists,
hydraulics, booms andoutriggers– even a
chart to record a load test and adeficiency
recommendation report.
TheLatticeBoomCraneAnnual
InspectionChecklist includesmore than
189 items, including a section forwire
rope, a chart for recording a load test
and adeficiency report. Both checklists
conform to the latestCranes andDerrick’s
safety standard issuedbyOSHA.
Uniformity is key
Additionally, SC&RAhasdeveloped the
TowerCranes andMobileCranesPre-
delivery InspectionForm. This checklist
answers thequestion, “What shouldbe
inspectedbefore the crane is shipped to
the site?”Andperhaps oneof thebiggest
benefits for SC&RAmember companies
is the ability todownloadPDF files of any
of theseguides from the “MembersOnly”
sectionof theAssociation’swebsite, and
print asmany as theyneed.
When askedwhyheprefers checklists
for tasks like inspections, Smith said
that uniformitywas akey factor. “Using
a checklist gives you consistency in
the evaluation andprovides all parties
with the ability to look for the same
