T
he third quarter summer holiday period, enjoyed bymuch of
theNorthernHemisphere, is already a distantmemory as the
industrymoves back into full swing.
For some, however, particularly inEurope, the first fewweeks of the
fourth quarter have not been as busy as expected. The uncertainpolitical
situation in theUkraine is one of the reasons given, alongwith a
faltering overall economy asEurope drags itself out of a long downturn.
In both of this issue’s interviews,Petri Paavolainen, managing director
ofDinolift, based inFinland and JeanSchreurs, managing director of
Netherlands-basedColléRental&Sales, come to the same conclusion.
It is backed up by theEuropeanRental Association (ERA),whichhas
just updated its forecast for the rest of this year andnext.Following a
relatively positive first quarter, the second and thirdquarters have failed
to live up to expectations, says theERA,namely a rebound in 2014 to be
consolidated in 2015. Instead, it says,Europe this year, in terms of rental,
will likely be flat, except for theUK,which is seeing good growth and
Germanywhich is at least hovering above zero.
But let’s not be too pessimistic - this is generally perceived to be a
blip on the road to recovery. And there is positive news about other
economies, including the aforementionedGermany in thePlatformers’
Days exhibition review onpage 44 and theMiddleEast regional report,
starting onpage 15 - access equipment is seeing good growth in the
UAE andSaudi Arabia, with othermarkets in the region showing
imminent potential. This growth is partly thanks toWestern contractors
insisting on the same level of safety onworksiteswherever they are in
theworld, including the use ofAWPs.
We continue the theme of worldmarketswith a report into the types
ofAWP equipment being used inChina andwhenwemight see the
promised exponential growth in themarket.
