usedConExpo as a
platform for stressing the importance of safe
working zoneswhenworkingnear power lines
on aerial work platforms.
Delivering a demonstration as part of the
Lift Safety Zone at theConExpo show, IPAF
illustrated the safe andminimum approach
distances that anAWP shouldbewhenworking
near power lines.
IPAF recommends: 50 feet plus a fully
extendedboom from electrical pylons and30
feet plus a fully extendedboom from cables
onwoodenpolls. These recommended safe
distancesmeet or exceed those specified in
ANSI standards andOSHA requirements.
TonyGroat, IPAFNorthAmericamanager,
explains, “Operators or supervisors are often
not in a position to know the voltage in the
power source. Knowing the voltage is essential
to determine theminimum approachdistance
(MAD), which is the safest distance a person
who has not had specific training in avoiding
electrical hazards should approach ‘live’
overhead cables.
