Raise your voice
I
t was some time ago when someone close to me admitted they weren’t
voting in the Presidential election. It had nothing to do with candidates or
parties; they just weren’t going to vote. To each his own, I suppose, but I
told that person, “For the next four years, no matter what the outcome, you
can’t complain about whatever candidatewins, their stances or policies.”
They kind of stared at me in disbelief, but I explained, “If you’re not
voting, then your voice goes unheard. You have no room to moan about the
consequences.”
Same goes for our industry.
In the coming months, our ANSI standards – which are reviewed every
five years and updated or reaffirmed every 10 years – will undergo major
revisions. There have been industry murmurings that the ANSI secretariat will
take a close and comparative look at ISO standards, which could in turn be
adopted into ANSI’s. These inclusions could mimic ISO’s requirement for load
sensing standards on all aerials or even something as significant as moving
from individual design, safe use and training standards for individual aerials to
grouped aerial categories.
What do you think of that?
From a broad perspective, these standards are developed by and for the
industry; it’s an industry-wide project. From volunteer, subject-matter experts
to general public opinion, anyone – and everyone – can get involved and have
a saywhen standards come out for public comments.
It’s up to you to get involved. It’s everyone’s responsibility to contribute to
what’s in a standard. So here are two easyways to get your voice heard.
Find out if any associations you belong to are on standards committees.
You can then voice your opinion through your association. If that’s not an
option, thenwhen the standard comes out for public comment, make sure the
secretariat (the Scaffold & Access Industry Association) hears your opinion and
ideas.
For example, what do you think about allowing end-users to exit an elevated
work platform to work on a structure? Safe? Unsafe? It could happen in the
coming year…
Make your voice heard. Be a part of standards-decision making. Because
when these standards are published and out there, that’s theway it goes for at
least another five years.
As for this issue, there's a lot to digest. We have our annual
TELEHANDLER
30
list that ranks North America's telehandler-fleet-owning
rental companies by total number of telehandlers owned. There was some
amazing double-digit growth by mid-sized and independents this year, make
sure to check it out on page 25.
I also conducted an interview with MEC's president, David White, about
the company's transition from typical aerial work platform provider to niche
specialist. See our interviewwithWhite on page 14.
We also have interviews with Acme Lift's new president, Mike Crouch (23)
and newer fall protection company, Tech Safety Lines (31). Plus a ConExpo
review, IAPAwinners announced and somuchmore.
Thanks for reading.
