Gearing up
J
anuary and February are usually low key months,
but not so much for those of us in the media who are
coordinating coverage of ConExpo 2014. Gearing up our
coverage of all the cranes, trailers, SPMTs, gantries, components,
rigging gear and related services that will be exhibited at the huge
construction equipment tradeshow has been a big effort. And
it’s been very interesting to see how seriously this tradeshow is
taken.
As we have been working with the communications departments
of all the OEMs and other exhibitors, I started thinking about
how hard they all work (and the enormous amount of money they
spend) to create the amazing exhibits and special events for those
who come to the show. So I queried a few ConExpo attendees
– Harry Baker, Southwest Industrial Rigging; Doug Williams,
Buckner Companies and Dan Mardian, Marco Crane & Rigging
– to see what they like about ConExpo. Well they like ConExpo a
whole lot. Mardian compared it to like being a child at a fair or a
circus because he loves cranes and equipment so much that it’s a
highlight to his schedule every three years. All of those I reached
out to were delighted with the way the show is planned and how
the OEMs go to so much effort to show them new cranes, new
technologies, new trailers, new rigging gear and the like. While
ConExpo is fun for those who attend, it’s also an important aspect
of doing business in this sector. The cranes, trailers and other
equipment at this show are very much a part of the future success
of their businesses. “I like the ability to see the latest technology
and new equipment that relate to my business,” said Baker. “Last,
but not least, you get to be involved in the largest gathering of
our industry people that occurs in the U. S. and see others in the
industry that you don’t often get time to see.”
Our ConExpo coverage this month is in several places – first in
our News section; in our Product Focus: All Terrains; and in our
ConExpo article that focusses on all the brand new cranes, trailers
and equipment you can expect to see at the show in Las Vegas.
Also in this issue are two interesting Site Reports, one that
focuses on a very long piece of cargo hauled by McTyre Trucking
in Florida, and the other is a job in Mexico City that involved
lifting and placing beams and columns for the construction of a
highway. Two Terex AC 500-2 ATs were instrumental in the job
that could only be performed six hours each night.
Our Interview this month is with Manitex International
President/COO Andrew Rooke, who reveals the strategy behind
the success of the company that started out with the acquisition of
boom truck manufacturer Manitex.
Do keep us informed about what’s going on with your company
this year – your people, projects, equipment and related. We will
also want to get your feedback on what you saw and did at
ConExpo.
And finally, this issue marks the last one with Pat Sharkey
on our
ACT
team. We wish him the best in his future
endeavors. Happy Trails, Pat.
