hat is going to build your business in 2015? If you’re a rental
company, are you focusing on rental rates and customer
relationships? As an OEM, are new products going to propel profit?
Whatmarkets – emerging or developed– are you concentrating on?
One sector that has beenmaking bank for many companies is shale oil and
gas. In late 2014, a number of telehandler manufacturers told me the energy
market was a gusher of profits.
“The states that have big oil and gas projects going on are seeingmore and
more telehandlers going into those areas,” Genie said.
And according to a recent report in Fortune magazine, U.S. oil production
increased from 5.6 million barrels a day in 2010 to a current rate of 9.3
million. However, the recent drop in oil prices poses a number of threats and
challenges to anyone with a toe in the proverbial black gold business – not
to mention that oil consumption in the U.S. has fallen nearly 8 percent since
2010.
That’s not to say your average sedan slinger won’t squeal with joy at the
pump – I can’t recall the last time fuel was $1.89 gallon (as it was during the
holidays inmy home state of Michigan) – and, generally, cheap oil is good for
the consumer and economy.
But what about when it isn’t?
Over the last few decades the U.S. has positioned itself as a major energy
producer, which improves economic growth and lowers unemployment in
areas responsible for producing energy. However, if oil prices remain under
pressure, these positives could turn negative as production decreases and jobs
are lost. It’s also a kick in the rear for alternative energy development as the
price of oil is hard to beat.
So, how do you see the current dip in oil prices affecting your business? Is it
good or bad? And why? Will oil prices remain low or are we going to bounce
backwithin due time?
As 2015 kicks off, I want to ask if you feel this will be a year of growth
for the North American – and global – economy? Or will we face continued
struggles (Europe, China) that ripple around theworld?
If the economy is steady for the U.S. and Canada, then The Rental Show,
Feb. 22-25 in New Orleans, is going to be the place to be this year as a
number ofmanufacturers plan to debut new equipment and products.
As a result of the number of new products and steadymarket conditions, we
created, special for this issue, a Rental Show supplement. Everything you need
to know is covered in detail within the 26-page guide. The supplement will be
both printedwithin this issue as well as a standalone "mini magazine" that will
be available at the KHL booth during The Rental Show. If you'd like your own
copy, stop by our booth (7921) and pick one up for free.
Thanks for reading.
