COMPACT TELEHANDLERS
transmissionwith travel speeds up to16mph.
Themaximum lift height is 20 feet and
maximum load capacity is 5,500pounds. Prior
to the525, JCBhad five compactmodels, so
they took the best features from those units and
put them into the525.
“Rental [companies] love compact units
because they are versatile– you canuse them
inparkinggarages or for snow removal,” Fox
says.Many compact units canuse skid-steer
attachments,making them evenmore of a
Swiss-Army-Knife tool.
“The versatility of theCat TH255C, with an
optional skid steer coupler interface, gives
contractors the ability to add lift height and
reach to the bucket and fork loading capabilities
normally required of a compact construction
machine,” says Peterson.
Additionally, compact telehandlers have the
ability to shift themachine sidewayswith crab
steermode, aswell asmaneuver in limited
spaceswith a tighter turning radius and lower
machine heights than similarly sized compact
wheel loaders.
“TheCaterpillar compact telehandlerwas
designed to appeal to awide customer base,
however, to address the rental
requirements specifically, we
intentionally kept the controls
simple to account for thewide variety of
operator skills,” says Vinden.
Popular by demand
For Genie, its compact GTH-5519 is one of its
most-popular telehandlers. TheGTH-5519was
upgraded and shown shiny andnew at ICUEE
2013. The companymade a number of changes
to one of its top-selling teles, including a
reduction in lengthby 5 inches and an increase
inwheelbase by 2 inches. The unit’s turning
radiuswas decreasedby 3 inches.
The telehandler’smaindesign changeswere
reflected in the engine choice, cabdesign,
serviceability andproduct quality.
“This telehandler is even simpler to use and
service,” saidChadHislop, director of product
management for Genie. “It is easy to drive and
offers industry-leading load capacity for its
size.”
TheDeutz TD2.9 L4Tier 4 final engine is
designed in such away that it does not require
a diesel particulate filter, only a diesel oxidation
catalystmuffler. The power of the engine is 74
hp at 2,600 rpm.
The chassis includes housing to allow access
to the hydraulic connections and air bleeding
valves. On the radiator topblock is the coolant
expansion tankwhich includes an electrical
coolant low level sensor. The radiator
includes an oil bypass valvewhich
simplifies installation.
The cabin interior features a black
dashboard and themain instrumentation
cluster offers an integrateddisplay
showingmessages coming from
the engine’s electronic
control unit. An air
defroster and ventilationunit
keeps the cabin comfortable, Hislop says.
“TheGenieGTH-5519 is an ideal workhorse
for today’s jobsites,”Hislop says. “As a general
purposemachine, it can fit into tight spaces,
helpunload trucks, and can efficiently carry
tools such as augers and sweepers.”
Major seller
According toBoeckmanwith JLG, the
company’s SkyTrak brand
is one of the best-selling
telehandlers
on themarket.
“This product range
is designed to provide the userwith a
machine that is reliable, simple to use and
easy to service,”Boeckman says. “SkyTrak
machines also incorporate aStabil-Trak system,
which increases operator confidencewhen
landing loads. JLG telehandlers are appreciated
by customers for their productivity, which
manifests itself in operator comfort, fast boom
speeds and strong load charts combinedwith
a powertrain that delivers outstanding jobsite
terrainability.”
JLG also recently introduced its new
telehandler reconditioningprogram– a
reconditionedG10-55Awas ondisplay at
ConExpo2014. “The program is an extension
of JLG’s current reconditioningprogram for
combustionbooms ranging from the40-foot
class to JLGUltraBooms,”Boeckman says.
“The JLGG10-55A telehandler is the first
JLG telehandler available for reconditioning.
However, wewill be rolling the reconditioning
program out to all our telehandlers as customer
demand requires.”
The reconditioningprogram involves tearing
down themachine, inspecting it, replacing
components based onwear, reassembling the
machine and repainting it – essentially restoring
themachine to “like new” condition.
