On the up-and-up
S
ummer thus far has proved to be the bearer of good news for the
access and rental industry.
Just last June, APEX in Amsterdam brought in 4,400 attendees and
manufacturers and exhibitors responded with much enthusiasm.
Snorkel’s CEO, Darren Kell, said APEX had “exceeded all expectations…
Snorkel had a busy three days.”
Stephan Kulawik, managing director at Palfinger Platforms, said, “During the
exhibition we sold a lot of new machines to existing and new customers.”
Brad Boehler, president of Skyjack, said the show was busy and profitable
for the Canadian-based company.
All in all, the three-day event was an indicator of improving markets around
the world, save for some Southern European destinations which are still
struggling to dig out of recession.
Here in North America, particularly in the U.S., signs point to increased
construction activity.
Construction put in place in the U.S. for the 12 months to the end of May
stood at $956 billion, a +6.6 percent rise on a year ago according to the U.S.
Census Bureau. This was also an increase on the year-to-April figure, and over
the course of the first five months of 2014, construction output was up +8.2
percent on the same period last year.
In recent months, residential construction has driven growth, however,
there was a downturn in May. Private residential construction was down -1.5
percent from April, and the growth compared to a year ago was +7.5 percent
– a significant slowdown on earlier figures in the year.
However, private non-residential construction saw slight acceleration in
May. The sector was up +1.1 percent compared to April, and +11 percent
compared to a year ago, thanks to strength in the power, commercial,
manufacturing and office construction sectors.
In this issue, our own
Scaffold
20
toplist reflects growth, as well. The
scaffold erecting and dismantling market grew by more than 6 percent over
last year’s figures and of particular note is the combined businesses of Harsco
Infrastructure and Brand Energy. Brand is now the largest scaffolder in North
America and the combined business is expected to have a total of $3 billion in
sales. See our report on page 22 for more.
Thanks for reading.
