Issue 5
July-August 2013
O
ne of the things that always strikes me about this industry is
its ability to adapt and innovate despite facing tough market
conditions in its day-to-day business. This issue is full of
examples of that, whether it be Manitou’s interim CEO Dominique
Bamas talking about how the latest engine emission laws have pushed
cash-strapped manufacturers to the limit, or Haulotte’s innovative new
‘entrapment prevention system’ launched during a challenging financial
period for the company. The fact is, nothing gets in the way of safety and
the push for improved performance, and that is to be admired.
In the interview with Mr Bamas, starting on page 10, we learn how
the company is moving ahead with plans for expansion, particularly
where access equipment is concerned, while actively seeking a new
CEO to take these initiatives into the future. Haulotte chose the UK’s
Vertikal Days to launch its entrapment prevention device, which the
manufacturer says is influenced by the best bits of existing devices with
a few home-grown innovations of its own. This spirit of innovation was
echoed throughout the exhibition as manufacturers continue to battle
against the unpredictable European headwinds. See the Vertikal Days
review starting on page 42.
The annual
access
50
listing of the world’s biggest rental
companies, by fleet size, is always a good barometer of market
conditions. This year’s instalment, appearing on page 23, is no exception.
The figures garnered from rental companies across the world present a
blunt assessment of our times: including all the usual ups and downs,
mixed with some telling insights. The survey highlights the fact that
rental companies, and manufacturers, are using all their experience and
knowhow to eke out a profit, whichever part of the world they are in.
Perhaps, to a greater or lesser extent, it has always been that way?
One way to get your fix of topical access-related information
and discussion, setting aside this magazine, is at the Europlatform
conference, taking place on 3 October in Istanbul. There is an impressive
line-up speakers set to share their valuable experience and data, so don’t
delay, see the preview on page 13 and book your place soon to benefit
from an early bird discount.
Finally, I would like to mention the Access in Action feature that
appears at the end of this issue. It originally appeared in the 1990s,
presenting a range of site reports from around the world.Throughout
this year we have been running highlights of that section as part of
AI’
s
30th anniversary celebrations. For this issue we have reinstated Access
in Action with a selection of projects that have taken place over recent
months. I hope you enjoy them.
