INTERNATIONAL
JULY-AUGUST 2013
adding to its ownership of Gunco Group
acquired in 2011. Last year Mateco was listed
in 25th position, but Gunco was not listed.
This year both companies are brought together
under the TVH banner in 16th place, with a
combined fleet of 10866.
In another recent acquisition, Rutland
Partners acquired the majority shareholding of
UK major AFI-Uplift, and at the same time
bought fellow UK rental company Hi-Reach.
Hi-Reach’s 1500-strong fleet is included with
AFI’s fleet for this listing. It will be interesting
to see if further consolidation occurs across the
industy over the next year.
In Australia, another strong access market,
the signs are less clear. Entries from Coates
Hire and Boom Sherrin - formally listed as
Boom Logistics, but still part of the same
company - are showing reductions in their fleet
sizes. However, both the companies’ fleet sizes
were estimated last year, so it is difficult to
form an accurate conclusion. Coates, which is
in at 22, saw its fleets size down 6% compared
to last year, perhaps the result of a relatively
uncertain few months. In June, Seven Group
and Carlyle said they will retain ownership
of Coates Hire following the strategic review
of the business. The owners, which each own
around 46% of Coates, said that they “remain
fully committed to the business and continuing
to grow” Coates Hire. The strategic review was
begun in November last year.
Ups and downs
In Japan, the story is one of stability, with
Nikken Corp. retaining its top 5 position with
an increase of 4% in its fleet. Nishio Rental
All, which retains its 14th place from last year,
shows a 7% rise in its fleet size.
And in South America, perhaps the most
actively observed emerging market in the
world, Brazil’s biggest two rental companies
are displaying different signs. Mills, in 30th
position, is showing a significant growth with a
23% bigger fleet size. It moves ahead of fellow
Brazilian rental firm Solaris this year. Last year
Solaris was in 30th position, but this year it sits
at 36 with a fleet reduction of 16%. It is worth
adding, that in the 2012 listing Solaris had
increased its fleet by 100% compared to 2011,
while Mills showed a marginal fleet growth.
So this year’s figures may reflect an evening
out of fleet sizes to reflect the true state of the
market. Nevertheless, in June Mills placed
orders worth US$41.6 million, so it will be
interesting to see its fleet size next year.
